At Around Pioneer Square.

This sculpture is a bust in stone of Chief Sealth, the leader of the Suquamish and the Dwamish.
The name of the city, Seattle, comes from this Chief.

In the U.S.A, they are called the Native Americans, having lived before the 1700’s when European immigration started.

After that, because of “Caucasian dominance and treaties like the Manifest Destiny, the Native Americans lost their places.

However, the Chief Sealth promoted him to live together with the immigrants peacefully so they built his statue to praise his work. But on the other hand, he felt suffering also.
He chose this way to avoid needles fighting and sacrificing lives, the immigrants destroyed the nature that the Native Americans had cherished easily and insisted their power with their own only.

Native Americans have no idea, own the land.

He left these words.
“Earth does not belong to us; we belong to earth. ”
“Humans merely share the earth. We can only protect the land, not own it.”

If we look at today’s America, there is a problem about rejecting immigrants. However, they were immigrants before.
Not only America, many countries tend to look at immigrants as a problem.
Japan is included.
But if you look at the long term, the results are different which era you take.

In Japan, the Ainu have been living in Hokkaido Japan since ancient times. But since Meiji-era(1860’s), the government started immigration and the Ainu culture was forbidden. Nowadays, their group has become small but their culture has been recovering little by little by the Ainu and who cares about it.

If you look at ancient Japan, the Jomon people lived in the whole land but the Yayoi people came from Asian continent, many, and their bloods were mixed with then it goes like today.

In Europe, there were many racial migrations in its history.

However, because of it, I would not say it’s needed to accept people unconditionally anyway.
Cultures consist of sharing the same language and customs. Then a country is one of the ways to inherit their culture, I think.

But if they become the same, there is no diversity.
If the world has a single culture only, how vain it is.
There is no joy to travel.
However, I would say an exclusive idea is wrong at all.
If where they are from is different, there are many people who love its country and cherish it. Also there are who look down others and who understand others well.
I belong to the “Japanese” category, but I love American music, food, and nature.
On the other hand, I met many Americans who like Japan.
The same thing can be said about Japan. And there are people who are Japanese look down on the same Japanese and who are foreigners who understand Japanese well.
It can be said not everything is wrong, but the problem is one of the tops who leads the whole.
I’m afraid that I don’t have clear answers for these issues now, but The important thing is to understand and respect each other and help each other, I believe.

To say more, America is a country where many cultures are living together and creating new culture, the most, and it is good thing of America, I think.

Besides, today’s earth environment has been changing a lot.
I think it’s time to remember words by Chief Sealth.
Then here, Seattle is a city which has a culture of Native American and Chief Sealth.
